The Three Words Every Woman Needs To Hear

I've been thinking a lot lately about how short life really is. There are things I've wanted to do that for one reason or another, I've just never done.

I've always wanted to photograph something different. Something outside the box. As much as I love photographing newborns and little ones of all ages, I really LOVE photographing women and making them say, "wow!" Most women don't think that when they look in the mirror every day, unless it's more like, "wow, I need to lay off the Christmas cookies." I find myself constantly inspired by women I see and music I listen to. I relate to women. I understand them.

I've always loved fashion, though I've never been on the cutting edge of each season's most popular styles. Trendy, but hardly high fashion. However, there's something so incredible about high fashion portraits. They're different, sexy, and they scream confidence and badass-ness. So many times, I have imagined the kind of things I would like to photograph. Women of all shapes and sizes and skin tones dressed in the craziest and most beautiful garments. The kind of weird stuff you see on runways in Italy - except on regular people.

Finally, I said to myself, "what are you waiting for?" So I found a model and got my first high fashion portrait on my calendar. I got to go shopping for craft supplies and create this amazing headpiece. Let me tell you, as a creative, this session left me feeling so fulfilled. Now, someone who is an expert in fashion might look at this and say, "Fashion? No." I don't care. This is what my heart wanted to produce and my model felt like a queen for an evening.

At the end of our session, I was helping her take the many many pins out of her super long hair. I saw her hair fall across her shoulder and I said, "hang on, we're not finished yet." And then this happened:

The REALLY cool part? She's never modeled before. She's a 41 year old mother with a full time day job. An average woman. Of course, she's gorgeous. The point is that she doesn't fit the mold of a "real" high fashion model. There's been a very body-positive movement happening for women in the last few years and it's growing stronger. Every woman knows what it's like to not feel good enough.

So, what about these three words? You probably thought I was going to say the three words every woman needs to hear are, "I love you." While that's always a welcome sentiment, it's not the most important.

You are enough.

I want you to let that sink in. I know what you're thinking. I'm not pretty enough, not skinny enough, whatever it may be. But you ARE enough. You're enough right now. You're beautiful the way you are and if you don't believe me, let me prove it to you.

I choose from this day forth to be good enough now. I don’t need to be younger. I don’t need to be slimmer. I’m good enough now. I’m smart enough now. My body is perfect now.”
